How do you texture a ceiling?

The style I'm most interested in what I think is called "knockdown". It resembles large spills that have been flattened or scraped somehow. There must be some tricks. I have the weapon texture. I 'd like to get it right the first time.

whats buy a brush called stomp. light water down some joint compound, stomp on the ceiling and glide through a drywall knife. Stomp and called drag. go to any Sherwin Williams store and they should be able guide you in the right direction. im a painting contractor is doing all the time. good luck. td
