Does anyone else find the sheer number of crime fiction genre TV shows to be excessive?
Some of them are really good though – it’s just that I personally think it’s too focused in one particular genre. I’d be better if there were more TV shows that branched out into other genres, like psychological thriller, horror and fantasy, etc.
Does anyone else agree? What are your opinions?
It’s excessive when the audience viewing figures start to drop for this type of show. But to be honest, the crime dramas are amongst the biggest draws on TV, particularly the Law & Order and CSI franchises.
Crime dramas are good, prime time cliffhangers where good nearly always triumphs over evil. The viewing public have had a huge appetite for these kinds of shows ever since the 1950s and Dragnet.
Personally, I prefer shows like The Sopranos (and other HBO shows), where they’re freer to use the authentic language and behavior, and the characters tend to be quirkier. House MD is another stand-out series.
But as long as a show is well-written, has charismatic actors and stays fresh, I’ll watch it, no matter what genre it’s in.
