What is a good budget estimate for a horror short film?
My friends and I are entering a contest and need to know everything we need to consider.
We have filming equipment.
Know any good ways of making do with certain props and such?
There was an entire zombie film shot in South America for under $200 because they already had a camera, and used whatever materials were available. It really depends what your goals are. You write for what you have available, and you can do it for no money at all. If you need to rent equipment, suddenly your budget expenditure goes. Have to buy props or dish out for fake blood or a fog machine? Cost goes up. Actors are free but want food? More money…
It’s really a case by case basis in determining what your budget should be. Find locations you can use for free. If you do spend money, invest in lighting your scenes well instead of on hokey makeup or masks. But in the end, it’s really up to you.
If you have $500 and want to spend $500, then by all means use the $500. If you have $20 and don’t mind spending $20, then limit yourself to a budget of $20.
